Mr. Michael Potts

Consultant Ophthalmic Surgeon

Mr Michael Potts is a Bond-Solon trained Consultant Ophthalmologist in Bristol. He has special expertise in the visual effects of head-injury as well as general ophthalmology, neuro-ophthalmology, oculoplastics, and orbital disease especially thyroid eye disease.

He spent 20 years a Consultant at the renowned Bristol Eye Hospital. As well as being a General Ophthalmologist, his main areas of special interest were in Orbital and Oculo-plastic Surgery where he provided a Regional service to the South-West of England. He also had a special interest in Thyroid Eye Disease and its management with immunosuppressive techniques. He ran a combined clinic with the Endocrinologists for the management of these patients. He also provided Specialist Neuro-ophthalmic support to the Department of Neurology and Neuro-surgery at Frenchay Hospital, Bristol. Along with this he provided specialist neurophthalmic assessment to the patients on the Brain Injury Recovery Unit (BIRU) at Frenchay.

Mr Potts originally studied Physics BSc. Bristol 1973 before undertaking a PhD in Vision Research at Bristol Medical School 1976. He qualified in Medicine in 1981 from Bristol University Medical School. He did his early ophthalmic training at Bristol Eye Hospital 1983-86 before going to Moorfields Eye Hospital 1986-91 for Senior Registrar and Orbital/Oculoplastic Fellowship training. He returned to Bristol to take up his Consultant’s position at Bristol Eye Hospital in 1991. During his time as Consultant Ophthalmologist at Bristol Eye Hospital he established the sub-specialty of Orbital Oculo-plastic and Lacrimal Surgery. With a weekly clinic at Frenchay Hospital he developed close working relationships with the Consultants in the Department of Neuro-surgery and Neurology at Frenchay Hospital and the BIRU Unit at Frenchay. In Bristol he worked the Consultants in ENT surgery, Maxillofacial surgery, Plastic surgery, Dermatology, Endocrinology and Radiology in Bristol Royal Infirmary.

For the past 20 years, he has organised a Royal College of Ophthalmologists approved sub-specialty training Fellowship in Orbits and Oculoplastics which has attracted International Fellows for training at Bristol Eye Hospital. He is an Examiner for the Royal College of Ophthalmologists, and a Founder Member of the British Oculo-plastic Surgical Society (BOPSS). He is also a member of the European Society of Orbital, Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery (ESOPRS) and a Founder Member of the British Isles Neurophthalmology Club (BINOC). He has extensive publications in the areas of Orbital, Oculo-plastic and Thyroid Eye Disease together with other general ophthalmology topics. He is a frequent National and International Lecturer in his areas of special interest and teaches extensively in these areas.

He was actively engaged in research in his areas of sub-specialty interest and undertook a multi-centre trial with Moorfields Eye Hospital on the treatment of Thyroid Eye Disease amongst other active research areas.

Mr. Potts has been in Medico-Legal Practice since 1995 and is an experienced Expert. On average he undertakes 50 cases per year with an approximate split of 60/40/10 Claimant/Defendant/Joint reports.
